Tess of the D'Urburvilles — BBC's new costume drama starts Sept. 14th

You can check out the official BBC site here. It looks really nice! Though they're putting less and less content up these days, it seems. Still, well put-together.

IMDb.com page.

The official BBC press packet for Tess of the D'Urbervilles is here. (You can keep clicking on "next section" to browse the archives.)

More info at Gemma-Arterton.net, a fansite for the actress who plays the main character, Tess Durbeyfield. The site also has an amazing collection of images from Tess. You can also browse the "Articles" section for full articles about the series (i.e. here.) Of course, this all focuses on the one actress, so the gallery isn't complete, but it's still excellent.

I'm so excited for this! Even though I know it's sad, I always love me some good BBC costume drama. It's exciting that it is a new author, too — you don't hear much about Thomas Hardy. (I was rather spoiled last year, getting both Jane Austen and Elizabeth Gaskell, no?) I'm glad to expand my own "classic literature horizons," so to speak, heehee. I've even got the novel to read before I see the series, though I suppose that's not always a good idea, reading it right before watching it. All of the differences stick out even more. But I do love reading the book before seeing the movie/miniseries — it always is better that way.

Is anyone else excited?

This novel is my favorite (I was actually sad in high school when we read it and my teacher didn't require a paper on it) so I'm really excited to see this new adaptation.

I've never read this book but I'm really excited for the drama. It looks very well done. Thanks for posting about this, I would have never heard otherwise.

It certainly looks attractive, but I hated this book so much. Still, I know I'll be watching it!

Thomas Hardy is one of my mother's favourite authors. Far From The Madding Crowd is her favourite, I think. And Jude the Obscure also. I've not read either of them (hmm, I ought to do I think!) but I thought I'd just throw them out there as a suggestion ;)

I'm quite looking forward to it. Thomas Hardy is one of my dad's favourite authors so I've read quite a few of his books (plus some of his poetry).

I've always really liked this book, despite it's sad ending. I can't wait to see what they do with it. I did like the Justine Waddell version a lot though so I'm not sure they can top it.

*raises hand excitedly* I am! The trailer and filming style reminds me of Sense & Sensibility, so I hope that means we won't be disappointed aesthetics wise. :)

I remember reading the book back in high school and having a serious love/hate relationship with it. The story was "too sad" for my tastes. I'm curious as to which way the adaptation will make me swing.
