Jane Eyre Review and Picspam
So, what do you think? Is this the Jane Eyre?

Hmmm. I was going to do my own review of Jane Eyre, but as there's already been so many, and mine was turning more into "what was different from the book that I didn't quite like" so... well, here's a (not-so) condensed version, mostly of episode four.

  • First of all, I love Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens. Rochester is such a tease at points, with moments of tenderness. And then he's so passionate... With Jane, I loved when she was happy, and my heart broke when she would just burst into tears in episode four. And then she was so happy when she found out the Rivers were cousins...

  • The proposal scene wasn't anything like I imagined — I think of it as being in a garden, in a little alcove in a stone wall, on a bench, and it is evening. And I can't help but add moonlight, even though I think it's sunset, but anyway. I loved Jane's passionate outburst, and Rochester, but I guess I was seeing it differently. Will have to watch it again. :)

  • Bertha was much too pretty. She was like a scary Catherine Zeta-Jones, all ready to pounce at Rochester. or Jane. That was slightly scary... But I liked how they showed the whole fire with Rochester trying to save Bertha. It redeems his character, in a way.

  • I liked the flashbacks — I think it allowed the episode to start at the right place, and it also shows how fresh it still is to Jane. She hasn't forgotten Rochester at all, or love him any less.

  • St. John was how I would picture him (though maybe not exactly in appearance, but that's being nitpicky.) I was a little disappointed with how fast they sped through Jane's stay with Mary and Diana, though. It seemed to lack the warmth of the book. Also, in the book it is emphasized how equal they are to Jane in intellect — how she admires them for their minds (which is a theme almost, isn't it?) That wasn't present in the series so much. Other than that, though, the Rivers and Jane's stay there was how I though of it. :)

  • On a side note, Jane recieves 20,000 punds from her uncle, right? That would be an annual income? And that's double even Mr. Darcy's income — his was 10,000 pounds. And Mr. Bingley's was 5,000, so they all had it very good. (And both Mr. Bennet and Colonel Brandon had 2,000, though Mr. Bennet is made out to be poorer and Brandon is a rich gentleman, but that's another subject altogether.)

  • Jane's return to Rochester was just how I imagined it. Loved it. With him wondering if she is real, her combing out his wild hair. And even her not telling him how she heard his call to her.

  • Aw, I loved the end scene! One big, happy family. :) And they have two little kids!! Aw. :D Rochester's face lights up, and everyone is happy...

That still turned into a what-was-different-from-the-book review, but in case I sound too negative:
I loved the series! It was beautiful and passionate and heartwrenching and I can't wait for the DVD.

These are pics I made mostly for random icons at the end of episode four, but I figured I'd post them here for your viewing — and, if you'd like, iconing — pleasure. (And I love Jane's hair at the end — I can't stand that braided hairstyle over her ears...)

Picspam! I loved the last episode. Want to watch it over again. :(

About the £20,000 I think that was a one off. Like Georgiana Darcy had a fortune of £30,000. Mr. Darcy's was a private income. I'm not sure women could actually have a private income, though they could have an allowance given by their male guardian. Interesting!

Yes, exactly - Georgiana's "thirty thousand" may sound amazingly huge but Darcy's "ten thousand a year" is really considerably more, coming in every year from his tenants and such. Women who relied on their own resources, like Jane Eyre after she inherits but before she marries, would be living off the interest of whatever lump-sum they possessed.

Alright, I understand it better. Thanks. :)

But what would happen to John Eyre (Jane's uncle)'s annual income? Would it just cease to exist? Or would he not necessarily have an annual income to begin with?

If a man's money came from land ownership, like Darcy's, then the income would pass to whoever inherited the estate. But John Eyre was a merchant, so he earned his money from the work he did; he wouldn't be entitled to any further income after his death.

Oh, I made them myself. :) Someone may be making some screencaps available soon, or I might even make some, though I don' know how many there'd be. I think [info]lilycup has made some already...

The series was fantastic. I really loved it. I agree with [info]fair_terentia though, I think the £20,000 is a once off.

I think I'll remember this adaptation more for Mr Rochester than Jane strangely enough. I thought Ruth Wilson was great as Jane, but Toby Stephens brought something new to Rochester for me - humour. Esepcially compared to say Timothy Dalton. I think there was more warmth in Toby's Rochester. I could definitely see Rochester & Jane living out the rest of their lives very happily together.

I had to laugh though when he suggested they could live together in a villa in the Mediterranean. And that plan would have last for all of...oh, two hours on arrival, maybe? ;p

Rochester did have a warmth to him, though he could be quite cruel and teasing, too.You could see how much he loved Jane. I could definitely see Rochester & Jane living out the rest of their lives very happily together.

That was funny, Rochester's comment about living like brother and sister in the Mediterranean, with the platonic kiss on the cheek on birthdays. :)

Oh my goodness!!!! Those pics are just beautiful. Wow, they look like they suit the part well, and the last one is just gorgeous :-) I especially like how Jane looks - she's rather plain still (or just real looking anyway) but she's not ugly like (no offence!) the older Jane Eyre - in the William Hurt one. Anyway, I can't wait to see it! How many episodes is it? And I really liked your review. You didn't sound negative, and there all the kinds of things I think about after watching a movie so it was cool! I can't wait for your icons :-)

Both actors were excellent. I know what you mean about Jane — she looks plain, but still pretty. I think that's a credit to the costume and hair department, really. Honestly, I kept flip-flopping while watching the series, trying to decide whether Ruth was more plain or more pretty. She really is beautiful, though, if in a more unconventional way.

There's four episodes, each an hour long. It really is so, so good. Again, I think I saw it differently having just read the novel. I want to watch it again, but would prefer it on a DVD (with the comfort of a couch and not my brother's computer and desk). Do you have any idea when you will be able to see it in Australia? Are there channels that play these series there? I wonder how long it will take for the DVD to come out...

Yeah, she just looks really natural. Kind of like a normal person, rather than an actress, you know? I like it!

Hm, on Amazon it says it'll be available February next year. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Jane-Eyre-2006-BBC/dp/B000IJ7H2C That's in the UK however. I'll keep looking for an Aussie release date though - I can't wait!
